The John Orwell Sports Centre in Wapping has opened a brand new AstroTurf pitch thanks to funding from Sport England and the Tower Hamlets Council.
Mayor John Biggs opened the new facilities last Wednesday, January 13. The improvements also include LED floodlights and better services for disabled users.
The new pitch can be used for football and hockey games and will be available for multi-sport bookings from schools. The centre also plans to update the outdoor changing rooms.
Speaking at the opening, Mayor Biggs said: “The John Orwell Sports Centre has seen a huge amount of investment and we are making this a great place for people in the borough to get fit and active. It’s key for our residents to have quality sport centres. Not only will it see improvements in your health but it also has huge benefits to mental health. I hope people in the borough enjoy these brand new facilities.”
By March 2016, the centre will have received £650,000 of council funding in a capital improvement programme. The centre also had its entrance, gym and reception renovated last summer.
Local councillor and cabinet member for culture Asma Begum said: “This sports centre will be one of our flagship centres for sport and physical activity – thanks to investment from the council and Sport England. It is important for the council to invest in sport – because it delivers savings elsewhere. For example, if we have healthier and happier residents, there will be less of a strain on our doctors and hospitals. I really hope our residents make the most of this fabulous facility.”
