Lewisham shopping centre has created a new project to help buskers and other local musicians to show their talent.
According to the spokeswoman of Lewisham shopping, the centre will provide semi-circular mats at various places in the shopping centre – similar to those used on the underground for buskers. The project will also allow performances to go on free of charge.
The initiative is a unique one as most shopping centres avoid buskers. The spokeswoman explained: “Busking is an intrinsic part of London culture. We’re proud to be able to provide a platform in South East London for musicians to showcase their talents.”
Paul Redden, centre manager at the shopping centre, said: “Having live musicians in the centre will create a fantastic ambience for shoppers, who I’m sure will enjoy being entertained while they shop!”
The quality and form of buskers’ show will be formally organized with Lewisham shopping accessing performers’ work via either YouTube or Soundcloud. Informal audition may also take place.
According to the spokeswoman, the project has only received a few applications, but they will continue to keep their doors open for interested musicians.
