Local pop-up restaurant Mother Flipper Burgers took line honours at the Food Fight Festival at Borough Market in South London Thursday night, claiming the title of London’s best burger.
The Lewisham business, which habitually flips its burgers at the Brockley Market on Lewisham Road, served a grilled mushroom, candy bacon, Swiss cheese creation winning the hearts of hundreds of visitors that cast their votes after tasting twelve burger nominees.
The event was part of the London Restaurant Festival and featured selected restaurants that each served mini tasters of their signature burgers ranging from truffle liver, foie gras and iberico ham, to the more classic bacon-cheddar-cheese interpretation of the beloved meal.
There was an impressive turn out at the event, and with tickets priced at £40, many arbiters of taste had found their way to Borough Market for the one-night-only ‘Burger V Burger’ competition.
One visitor, Will, 32, said: “I consider myself quite the expert, I must say. But I really always do the classic cheese burger so I thought it would be fun to taste what else is out there.”
On Twitter, competitors congratulated Mother Flipper Burgers shortly after the victory and the winner responded with a “Thanks guys! Well chuffed! Keeping it Street.”
Mother Flipper opened in 2011 as a street food restaurant and has served burgers to hungry East Londoners in Peckham Springs, Dalston and on Brockley Market in Lewisham where you can find the ‘burger flippers’ every Saturday.
Other participating East London restaurants included Red Dog Saloon from Hackney.
You can try the award-winning Mother Flipper burgers at Brockley Market every Saturday 10am-2pm.
