The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, along with dozens of other MPs and community leaders are calling on the Home Office to ban a planned march by the English Defence League, organised to take place on September 7 in Tower Hamlets.
Those calling for the ban, who have signed an open letter sent to the Guardian newspaper today, include former Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, leader of Unite the Union, Len McClusky, former cabinet minister Clare Short and MP and Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, Keith Vaz.
Faith groups including the Islamic Forum of Europe and Tower Hamlets Interfaith Forum have also signed the letter. There is particular concern that the EDL have openly declared they will target the East London Mosque.
The letter to the Guardian states: “‘The EDL intend to bring a message of hate to our borough. They seek to exploit the shocking murder of Drummer Lee Rigby for their own destructive ends. Their target is the largest mosque in the country.
“On previous protests, the EDL have abused worshippers and threatened to destroy mosques. Their protests invariably result in violence against local communities, property and the police.”
It goes on to say that they will “continue to demonstrate that Tower Hamlets is No Place For Hate” and ask the Home Office to act. Lutfur Rahman has also written to the Borough Commander in Tower Hamlets.
A spokesperson for the Tower Hamlets Mayor’s office told EastLondonLines: “The last time the EDL planned to march in Tower Hamlets it was banned but some of them gathered anyway. This time they are being more provocative but also there are more people asking for their march to be stopped, with more MPs getting involved.”
UPDATE: Two EDL leaders have been charged with obstructing police officers in east London. They were arrested on the 29 June outside Aldgate East tube station allegedly trying to defy a police ban on them marching via the East London Mosque to the site of the murder of soldier Lee Rigby. Tommy Robinson, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court today, Thursday 22 August, his co-leader Kevin Carroll was also charged.
The EDL say they are not racist, so show me a similar protest against a Christian faith school and I’ll think about changing my opinion. Would people be against “Muslims”if they were white?the enemy of this country is the “establishment”,let’s not fall into the trap of turning on the weak,is like Hitler tried.as our greatest writer said (Shakespeare)I might not agree with what you say and believe in but I believe in your right to say and believe it.that’s what sets the British apart,we always try to welcome diversity. All this pandering to Islam has to stop! As for comparing these “faith” schools with Catholic schools is just nonsense! This Country was once Catholic. Is this really about faith schools or just Islamic faith school? There are many catholic schools in the are, I don’t see EDL protesting about community integration outside of those.
How can we live in multi cultural country, if you discriminate against children who wish to attend a faith school? Surely acceptance of other faiths is tolerance. Is Christianity English – clue is in the title and I don’t think He was brought up here, Judaism perhaps? Both of them in the Middle East and guess what? So was Islam. Is a Roman Catholic school ok? I don’t see anyone smashing the doors down and telling the ‘Eyeties’ to go home.

whether you agree with the EDL or not you start banning protesting then that is suppression of freedom to speech and demonstrate we would be as bad as Egypt why is there no letter to ban the UAF i find when im reading they have more ppl arrested than the EDL everyone should have the freedom to protest
EDL should be able to march where ever they want. Anyone is for that matter. Ok not all them walk around with halos above their heads. MP’s certainly don’t, but they’re are quick to point the finger at someone else. EDL are the only people making a stand for the people in this country. I’m not anti immigrant/muslim etc but there come’s a time when enough is enough. Deep down you know it.
