Hackney Museum unveiled an exhibition yesterday showcasing photographs of T-Rex’s Marc Bolan during his childhood years growing up amid the 1960s mod movement in Stamford Hill.
Bolan, born Mark Feld, was raised in N16 and made a deep impression on Hackney’s mod scene in the 1960s, becoming one of the ‘Stamford Hill boys’ known in the area for their style and feisty attitude.
Photographs on show include ones of Bolan taken in 1962, aged 15, for an article in Town magazine titled ‘The Young Take the Wheel’. They are displayed at the museum alongside clothing, mopeds and records depicting the Mod movement in the borough.
Miki Simmonds, one of the mods pictured with Bolan, said: “We thought we were going to live forever – we were the Stamford Hill boys. This was our meeting place, our turf.”
The exhibition includes local memories from others who grew up with the rock star in Stamford Hill, as well as a 1962 Vespa personalised by mod moped dealer Eddie Grimstead and an original Bilgorri suit from the same year.
The free exhibition runs until January 26 at Hackney Museum, Mare Street.
